Changing your device.

Your Kata data lives on your device, so a new phone or a new browser means bringing it across. It takes a few minutes, and there is a path for each case: iPhone to iPhone, the web, and between the two. Android has a page of its own.

Before you switch

Do this on your old device while it still has your data. It is the one step that matters, because we never held a copy we could hand back.

  1. Open Settings, Data, and tap Back up now, so the backup file on your iPhone is current.
  2. Tap Export my data and keep that one file somewhere you control, such as Files, Drive or an email to yourself: it is the copy that goes anywhere.
  3. On the web, under Moving to a new device, show your recovery key and keep a copy somewhere you control, or leave the QR code on screen for the new device to scan.

iPhone to iPhone

Kata 1.0 on iPhone has no iCloud backup of its own, so nothing restores by itself when you sign in on the new iPhone. There are two ways across. Set the new iPhone up from your iCloud device backup, which brings Kata's backup file along in the app's folder, sign in with the same account and tap Restore from backup in Settings, Data. Or move the file from Export my data to the new iPhone and tap Import there. Apple Health values are not in the backup file: after a restore from it, Kata brings the last 90 days back from Apple Health.

The web

On the web your sealed snapshot waits for you, so a sign-in in a new browser offers it: Welcome back, we found your Kata data. If that browser does not hold the key yet, tap Restore with a recovery key and enter the key or scan the QR code from your other browser. A key stays in the browser it was made in, so save the recovery key before you clear site data or move to another browser.

Between iPhone and the web

The iPhone app and the web app do not share a backup: the iPhone keeps its file on the phone, and the web keeps its sealed snapshot on Kata's servers. That is what Export my data is for. Export the file on one, move it to the other however you like, then open Settings, Data there and tap Import to bring everything in.

Android

On a new Android phone, your Google backup and the sealed snapshot bring Kata across; between Android and an iPhone, Export my data and Import do it, as they do between iPhone and the web. The steps are on Backups on Android.

Sign in once with the same account

Whichever path you take, sign in on the new device with the same account you used before. Your account is how Kata keeps your data yours across devices, even though the data itself lives on the device.

One thing to remember

Restoring or importing replaces what is currently in Kata on the new device with the backup. On a phone you just installed that is exactly what you want. Kata always shows you the summary and asks you to confirm first, and it never asks for a key it could have kept for you.
