Health Connect.
On Android, Kata reads your steps, workouts and nights from Health Connect, on your terms: read-only, the last 30 days, and yours to take back at any time.
On iPhone, the same job is done by Apple Health.
Connect
- In Kata, open your Profile, then Connections, and tap Connect Health Connect.
- Health Connect shows its own permission screen. Switch on the types you want Kata to read, or allow all, and confirm.
- Kata reads the last 30 days and fills the screens they belong to.
Health Connect gathers what your phone, your watch and your fitness apps write there, when they share with it. If nothing arrives, open Health Connect, then App permissions, then Kata, and switch on the types you want Kata to read.
What Kata reads
| What | Where it shows in Kata |
|---|---|
| Steps | Today and Activity |
| Active energy | Nutrition, next to what you eat |
| Distance | Today, and with each session |
| Workouts, with their heart rate | Activity, without logging them twice |
| Weight | Your weight trend and your calorie estimate |
| Height | Your profile height, only when you have not entered one |
| Sleep, with its stages | Sleep |
| Resting heart rate and heart rate variability | Your vitals, as signs of recovery |
Read-only: Kata never writes to Health Connect. It does not read nutrition from Health Connect, so on Android your Kata log is always the day's nutrition.
The last 30 days
Health Connect lets an app read the 30 days before you first connect it, and everything from then on. Kata does not ask for more history, so a first connection fills the last month, and older days stay as you logged them. Kata reads while the app is open, never in the background.
How imports behave
- Imported entries are tagged as coming from Health Connect and deduplicated per day.
- Your own logs are never overwritten. If you logged a workout by hand, the importer leaves it alone.
- Edit an imported entry and it becomes yours; the importer then leaves that value alone for good.
Where the values go
Health Connect values stay on your phone. When a question to Kata needs some of them, those values go with that question to our AI provider to write the answer; the provider deletes them within 30 days and does not train on them. They are never stored on Kata's servers, never sold and never used for advertising, and they are left out of your Google backup: after a restore, Kata reads them again from Health Connect. See Backups on Android.
Revoke access
Open Health Connect (in your phone's Settings, or as its own app on Android 13 and older), then App permissions, then Kata, and switch off what Kata should no longer read, or remove all. Kata stops reading at once. What is already in Kata stays, tagged as imported, until you delete it.
Or disconnect inside Kata, under Connections: Kata stops reading at once, gives its Health Connect access back, and lets you choose whether the Health Connect values already on this phone leave with it or stay. Your own logged entries always stay.
When Health Connect is not installed
On Android 14 and newer, Health Connect is part of the system. On Android 13 and older it is an app from Google Play: if Kata says Health Connect is not available, install Health Connect from Google Play, open it once, then come back to Kata and connect. Health Connect itself needs Android 9 or newer, so on an Android 8 phone Kata runs without it. Either way nothing is lost: tell Kata ("8k steps today") and it counts fully.
